Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Event to tour Kyoto’s ethical shops while “plogging” on 11/11

Against the picturesque backdrop of beautiful autumn scenes in Kyoto, an event where ethical shopping, jogging and litter picking come together for a unique experience is set to take place. On November 11, the event “Fair Trade Shop Tour & Plogging: A Blend of Community, Exercise, and Ethics” will unfold in Kyoto. Here, participants can enjoy jogging while exploring fair trade shops and more.

Plogging is a fitness trend originating from Sweden, combining the Swedish word “plocka upp” (to pick up) with the English term”’jogging.” It involves picking up litter while jogging, creating a novel approach to staying active.

The event is organized by “Plogging Osaka City,” a group that regularly hosts plogging events in Osaka, and “ARISA,” an ethical journalist.

On the day of the event, participants will gather at Demachiyanagi Station, a Kyoto subway station, and engage in plogging while touring various shops, including Sisam Kyoto Main Store, Totoya Zero Waste Market and Sisam Uradera Street Store.

At Sisam Kyoto Main Store, you can indulge in delicious fair-trade chocolates. They offer around 70 varieties of seasonal chocolates.

Totoya Zero Waste Market allows you to buy nuts, dried fruits and more in quantities that suit your needs with their “by weight” system, making it a perfect place for a snack during your plogging adventure.

As you reach the finishing point, Sisam Uradera Street Store boasts an array of ethical products. Besides coffee and tea leaves, they have items like tumblers and solar-powered Sonenglass lanterns, making it an ideal place to search for ethical souvenirs.

Following your plogging session, there’s also a planned lecture on climate change issues and ethical living.

Kyoto is not only known for its beautiful landscapes, historical temples and traditional culture but also as a hub for ethical shops. It’s a perfect destination for sustainable travel. So why not enjoy Kyoto to the fullest on an autumn day, combining plogging with the exploration of the city?
