Top honors announced at Fairtrade Japan Award 2023

Fair Trade Label Japan celebrated its 30th year with the unveiling of the “Fairtrade Japan Award 2023.” This non-profit, aligned with Fairtrade International, saw its inception as a beacon for sustainable and ethical trading practices in the Japanese market. And this year, they spotlighted 15 standout companies that have championed causes ranging from environmental protection to producer and regional support.

The landscape of fair trade in Japan has seen a commendable expansion over the years. A total of 252 organizations now hold the international fair trade certification, propelling the estimated market value of Fairtrade-certified products beyond an impressive 19.6 billion yen.

But beyond these numbers lies the heart of the matter. Companies engrossed in the world of fair trade not only engage with global Fairtrade producers but also actively foster environmental stewardship. This dual approach bolsters both international communities and a sustainable future. The awards were more than a celebration; they were an acknowledgment of these tireless efforts.

In the spotlight was Ogawa Coffee Co., Ltd., which clinched the Gold Award in the “Sales (Coffee)” category. Since 2004, their strides in amplifying sales of Fairtrade coffee have been noteworthy. Their offerings are now a staple in households across Japan, making them a leading name in Fairtrade coffee.

AEON Top Value Co., Ltd. bagged the Gold in the “Sales (Products excluding Coffee)” category. Their vast array of Fairtrade products, ranging from teas to jams, has been pivotal in broadening the market and making Fairtrade products accessible.

Sisam Fair Trade + design collaboration with Asian producers, particularly in India, earned them the Excellence Award in the “Producer Partnership” category. Their initiatives during the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, bridging the gap between producers and national Fairtrade shops, underscored their commitment.
