Sustainable Development Goals SDGs Goal 10: Reduced Inequality

What is SDGs Goal 10?

SDGs Goal 10 is “Reduced Inequality,” with its mission statement being “Reduce inequality within and among countries” by 2030.

This goal has 10 targets and 14 indicators measuring the world’s success in this aspect. For example, the targets include:

  • progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40% of the population at a rate higher than the national average,
  • empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status and
  • ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard.
  • Inequalities in Japan

One of Japan’s biggest struggles is gender inequality. Equality between the sexes slumps far behind other countries in the developed world. Japan’s significantly low ranking in the gender gap index shows this. A low ranking indicates difficulty for women to pursue education and career opportunities, potentially leading them to poverty.

Japan also struggles with giving fair treatment to minority people such as the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, Ainu people, Zainichi people and foreign residents.

Furthermore, Japan faces the challenge to adjust and promote diverse family dynamics. Inequality, particularly evident among children in need of homes, means adoption and fostering situations require drastic improvements.
