Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Zetton Inc among the lead to serve sustainable seafood in Japan

Global warming and pollution are significant devastators to the marine environment. They have interrupted the ecosystem of marine life.

Determined to do their part to mitigate these environmental issues, Zetton Inc., a food and beverage company will provide sustainable seafood to its customers starting this month. This change will be implemented at three of the company’s restaurants: PARKLIFE CAFE & RESTAURANT, CRYSTAL CAFE, and SORAMIDO BBQ, all of which are located within Kasai Rinkai Park.

Zetton Inc. wants to save the ocean. In order to do that, the company has successfully received certifications from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). Their seafood is also certified under the MSC/ASC Chain of Custody (CoC) standard.

MSC ensures that certified fisheries are well managed and practice sustainability. This standard focuses on three principles. Firstly, fishing is carried out at a healthy rate that does not affect the population of fishes in the sea. Secondly, fishing methods are environmentally friendly without impact to other marine creatures in the sea. Lastly, fisheries are ethical, by abiding relevant laws and practice adaptability to the ever-changing environment.

Similarly, ASC focuses on the environmental and social impact of fish farming. Environmentally, they ensure that farmers manage their fisheries with minimal impact on the environment. Socially, they ensure that farms are socially responsible in their operation.

The CoC standard essentially ensures that companies purchases certified products from certified suppliers. These products have to be distinguishable from those that are non-certified. Certified products sold are required to be recorded and traceable. In a nutshell, companies certified under the CoC standard are to uphold a well-managed system.

These certifications are vital to prove the reliability of sustainable seafood. By printing these certification labels on packaging and menus, it raises the awareness of sustainable seafood to employees and customers. By giving consumers the option of sustainable seafood, it also brings the Japanese fishing industry one step closer to sustainability.

Zetton Inc. aims to serve sustainable food at all Aloha Table outlets in Japan by spring 2020. The company will continue to incorporate the concept of the circular economy into its business strategies in the future.
