Satonoba university’s new education programs for regional revitalization

Satonoba University has announced the launch of two new educational programs: the “Gap Year Course” for college students and the “My Field Course” for adults, including those involved in regional revitalization initiatives.

Satonoba University, a unique learning institution, operates without a traditional campus. Instead, it provides an educational experience where students travel and study in various regions across Japan, engaging in project-based learning. Since its establishment in 2021, the university has primarily catered to students post-high school. In response to increasing interest from individuals at different stages of their careers or education, Satonoba University is expanding its offerings.

The “Gap Year Course” is a 10-month program aimed at individuals exploring career options, taking a break from university, or transitioning between jobs. This course is based on the traditional gap year concept, popular in Western education systems, where students take a break between different stages of their academic journey. The program allows participants to immerse themselves in regional communities while engaging in structured learning and project-based activities.

The “My Field Course,” an 8-month program, targets individuals like regional revitalization cooperators or regional coordinators, who are actively involved in specific fields. It offers an online learning platform where participants can continue their activities in their localities while receiving support and guidance in project-based learning and activities. The course is designed to provide introspection opportunities, diverse learning perspectives, and a supportive community for those navigating challenges in regional development.

Satonoba University’s approach to education is to facilitate learning that contributes to regional co-creation and development. The university emphasizes nurturing talents who can create desirable futures for communities, blending personal growth with communal objectives. With a focus on project-based learning, the university encourages students to engage deeply with local residents and cultures.

Currently, Satonoba University is collaborating with ten regions across Japan, including Nayoro City in Hokkaido and Shintomi Town in Miyazaki Prefecture, offering its unique educational model to a diverse group of learners. These new programs aim to widen the scope of participants and deepen the impact of learning, resonating with the university’s mission of fostering a generation capable of shaping sustainable and inclusive futures for local communities.
