Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

En-japan accelerating SDGs by recruiting staff for SDG-related actions

En-japan inc. is one of the largest companies that offers career-change services for jobseekers in Japan. The company has made public it will support a nonprofit organization called ‘International Medical Volunteers Japan Heart’.

Japan Heart is an NPO that is actively supporting people in need around the world with medical care and education. It is actively recruiting for various positions in Laos, including business manager, corporate planning and project manager for emergency relief.

This announcement is part of en-japan’s project to support companies and organizations that are making remarkable efforts to achieve SDGs. Following the adoption of SDGs in 2015, many businesses and organizations are making actions to incorporate SDGs in their business models and management plans, and en-japan’s project is another example of a business contributing to the acceleration of achieving SDGs.

This is another example of how businesses are making an effort to achieve sustainability from a different angle. Other companies such as Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. is a joined venture partnership between Fujifilm Holdings, While en-japan tries to achieve a sustainable society by recruiting staff for an organization that fights social issues, Fuji Xerox works on measures within its company as well as to contribute to the society’s work style innovation through its CSR plan, Sustainable Value Plan (SVP 2030). Euglena is another example of a Japanese company contributing to the SDGs by hiring a Chief Future Officer.

Supporting an organization engaged in SDGs by recruiting their staff and improving work style within the society may look like unrelated measures, but they are both examples of an influential effort businesses can make to create a sustainable society. Having the right human resource to achieve SDGs in an organization and developing a sustainable work style for every employee are inseparable. What en-japan spoke at its press release also corroborate this understanding; “for a sustainable development, recruiting the right human resource to achieve the goals is indispensable. We will not only recruit the staff but offer services to make sure they can engage in their work successfully. And through this support, we aim to contribute to achieving SDGs.” As the number of private companies that are moving forward to incorporating SDGs into their business policies grows in Japan, we can expect to see more people work lively with fulfillment in the future.
