Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Japan-made sustainable pen “Penon” now globally available at Kinokuniya

A manufacturing company that tackles social problems, PENON Inc., has launched a sustainable pen called “Penon” at Books Kinokuniya, one of Japan’s largest retail booksellers. Penon is now available at Kinokuniya in Japan and its 15 branches in the US, UAE, Singapore and Taiwan. This sustainable stationery uses 100% recyclable ink chambers and PEFC-certified wood and paper for its barrel and packaging to fight against climate change. Hence, Penon is expected to rewrite the future of stationery by contributing to conserving forests and reducing plastic waste.

How is this pen environmentally-friendly?

Penon is different from most sustainable pens in that the more Penon the consumers buy, the more forest they can save. In fact, PENON Inc. focuses on three SDGs goals: “climate action,” “life on land” and “responsible consumption and production.”

To protect sustainable forestry and reduce CO2 and plastic, Penon uses PEFC-certified wood and paper for its barrel and packaging. PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement Forest Certification, is a global alliance of national forest certification systems, which assures sustainable forest management that enables meeting the needs of future generations. The more PEFC-certified products we use, the more healthy woods grow to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, and the less plastic waste winds up in the landfill.

Due to technical issues, Penon struggled to develop alternative ink chambers with non-plastic products. Therefore, the brand has introduced its own recycling system of ink chambers to reduce plastic waste. PENON Inc. collects used ink chambers for free and separates them properly in order to make them reusable.

Cute design to add to your business casual outfit

Penon is not only environmentally-friendly but also wearable and fashionable. A pen is made to fit perfectly in your chest pocket to add colors and uniqueness to your outfit as its end cap and clip are decorated with embroidery. PENON Inc. collaborates with an embroidery atelier called “hinatelier” and uses various designs of glasses, ties, national flags and animals in their pens. These embroideries, made from natural materials, shine as though they are made from silk and are beautiful enough to show the “Made in Japan” quality.

If everyone starts to change their behavior, a major impact on the environment can be made. Although single-use products such as stationery may seem too obscure to have a significant effect, to stop climate change, it does not matter how small and subtle the action is.
