Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

SB’20 conference in Yokohama to build cross-border platform for sustainability

The launch of the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations in 2016 emphasized the need for a collective effort for a better future. Since then, corporations, educational institutes and local governments have been leveraging their social responsibilities to achieve these global goals. International conference, Sustainable Brands 2020 YOKOHAMA (SB’20) is scheduled to take place February 19-20, 2020, with the purpose of stimulating further exchanges and networking among concerned participants, and hopefully generating future innovations.

2020 will mark the fourth consecutive year that the conference is held in Japan. It will be the first year that it takes place in Yokohama, one of the innovative cities in Japan that are aligning their policies with SDGs. The organizers of the conference are Hakuten Corporation, a marketing events promotion company based in Japan, and Sustainable Life Media Inc, a brand innovator based in the U.S.

Under the central conference theme of “Delivering the Good Life,” innovative business leaders will lead the plenary sessions while sharing their insights on sustainability. They will include Masahiko Uotani (CEO of Shiseido Co. Ltd), Masaaki Tsuya (CEO of Bridgestone Corporation) and Koann Vikoren Skrzyniarz (CEO of Sustainable Life Media Inc). At the same time, the conference schedule will be filled with exhibitions, workshops, presentations, networking breaks and talk sessions. This conference will be a cross-border platform where professionals from a broad range of fields, such as marketing, branding strategy and business development from within and outside of Japan, can find inspiration and connect with each other.

Another essential element of this conference is the inclusion of the next generation. High school and university students are to be invited to SB’20, and they will audit the plenary sessions, join networking lunch and panel discussions. The younger generation plays an integral part in accelerating the transition to a sustainable society. Therefore, welcoming these youngsters to the table will help them deepen their knowledge, while organizations can grasp the emerging expectations and responsibilities of the next generation.

According to Hakuten, Sustainable Brands is one of the largest sustainability-focused conferences in Japan; there were 189 speakers and 2,240 attendees this year, and there will be more than 200 speakers next year. As a growing conference that facilitates future collaboration, there will be a hightened level of anticipation in the air.
