Adachi Ward is launching a groundbreaking initiative to combat food waste, harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) in a bid to optimize inventory and preparation processes. This marks the first application of such technology across Tokyo’s 23 wards.
The AI system will process a range of data points, including daily sales and weather conditions, to accurately forecast customer numbers and the most sought-after products. The approach aims to enable businesses to align their procurement and food preparation practices with expected demand, thereby minimizing waste.
Food waste in Adachi Ward is a major issue, with approximately 5,080 tons discarded by local businesses during fiscal 2019. In response, the ward has implemented an ambitious “Food Waste Reduction Promotion Plan”, targeting a 21.6% reduction in food waste generation by fiscal 2030, compared to the 2019 levels.
Previously, the ward has undertaken numerous measures to curb food waste, which included public awareness campaigns, promoting food drives, and advocating the use of food-sharing apps among local businesses. The AI-backed project forms part of an intensified effort to further reduce food waste, and if successful, the program may be expanded throughout the ward.
Businesses within the ward are invited to participate in the demonstration project until August 18.
