An abandoned school in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture, undergoing an artistic renovation is a great example of creating value out of the old. Closed in 2016, the town has turned the school into an asset that contributes to the town’s revitalization.
Understanding that the school space is one of learning for children and nostalgia for adults, the renovation has turned the abandoned school into a “utopia,” Nasu Utopia Minosawa Art Village. It offers families to stay, play, and learn about sustainability through workshops.
Sixteen artists who are active within the nation and overseas have taken the scrap materials in the school and created artistic exhibitions. Outdoor Finnish sauna “CUBERU” is also available for visitors, built using the pine tree on the school grounds. Even the cafe has links with local food & beverage establishments for local production, local consumption.
Nasu Utopia Minosawa Art Village is an excellent example of revitalization for Nasu town, with strong themes of reuse and upcycling.
Reservations are required for the camping, glamping, and sauna facilities, which you can make on their website. A variety of accommodations are also available, including outdoor cottages and renovated classrooms.
