The cactus-derived leather brand “CACTUS TOKYO” has calculated the “carbon footprint” emitted from the manufacturing process to the disposal of its own products. The calculation was made by referring to the “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Tool” announced in April 2021 by the San Francisco-based brand “Allbirds,” in the hopes that it will deepen understanding through communication with customers.
Going forward, they will disclose the carbon footprint of all items on the product page. There are two calculation criteria for the carbon footprint, broadly divided into 1) total emissions of the entire supply chain, and 2) emissions per product. CACTUS TOKYO has calculated based on the latter, which is closer to the consumers, by dividing the product’s life cycle into five phases: “material, manufacturing, transportation, consumer use, and disposal” in a “Life Cycle Assessment”. Among CACTUS TOKYO’s bags, the “Iconic Bag / LUETHYI”, which had the lowest carbon footprint, resulted in 6.35kg, and the largest “Big Tote / SAGUARO” resulted in 9.67kg.
Moving forward, they will continue to support the sustainable shift in the fashion industry through the continuous disclosure of product-specific carbon footprints, while focusing on building a brand that can contribute to biodiversity. In the long term, we will expand our business activities with a view to producing and developing new materials that can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the natural environment, just like cactus leather.
