Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

ROHTO and Matsukiyo wants to turn your empty containers into flower pots

Environmental issues have been discussed since the late twentieth century. Without a doubt, the health of planet earth is of global importance. We see companies, businesses, and enterprises doing their part to go green. However, there is still so much more that could be done. This is especially true for the manufacturing and retail industries.

Rohto Pharmaceutical and Matsumoto Kiyoshi Holdings launched a joint recycling program that will benefit your skin and the earth. They aim to fill up the gaps of existing green efforts in the beauty industry with this program.

Starting 1st September, customers can find collection boxes at every matsukiyo LAB outlet in Japan. Customers are encouraged to deposit their empty beauty plastic containers (regardless of brand) to be recycled into recycled materials that are used to make flower pots.

Apart from this recycling measure, Rohto Pharmaceutical and Matsumoto Kiyoshi Holdings have also implemented environmentally friendly initiatives in other areas of their businesses.

One of Rohto Pharmaceutical’s largest skincare labels, Hada Labo, offers its products in refill pouches, an option that produces less waste. Many of their products are also responsibly packaged with materials such as biomass and metalized PET film.

Matsumoto Kiyoshi Holdings has drugstores nationwide, lovingly known as Matsukiyo among fans. It has recently stopped the use of polyethylene plastic bags. Instead, they launched an original eco-bag made from recycled polyethylene. The plastic bags they offer now are also made with 30 percent biomass.

The concept behind this recycling program is not new. It is a contribution to existing sustainable strategies in the beauty industry. Both existing and new environmental initiatives are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations (specifically goal number 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17).

Rohto Pharmaceutical and Matsumoto Kiyoshi Holdings hopes to continue working with the environment in mind to build a sustainable industry.
