Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Borderless House share houses switches to zero carbon Hummingbird Electricity

Have you heard of “Hummingbird Electric Power”—an electric service in Japan that provides 100% real renewable energy with zero CO2? Provided by Borderless Japan Co., Ltd., their natural energy contributes to the prevention of global warming. They are also slowly receiving more exposure and collaboration, with more individuals and companies joining forces. Now, Borderless House Corp., known for its share house business across the country, announced earlier this month that it will start using their clean energy at 59 of its share houses in Japan.

It is only natural for Borderless House to turn to Hummingbird Electric Power to power their international exchange share houses. Their share houses in Tokyo and Kansai region are constantly packed with more than 500 dwellers, which meant that a large amount of electricity are used daily. Since 2016, when electricity was liberalized in Japan, Borderless House has been choosing electric power companies with high rate of natural energy. Upon learning that Hummingbird Electric Power provided 100% renewable energy, they didn’t hesitate to make the switch over. Moreover, the fact that they could support social contribution activities while paying their electricity bill was a strong appeal.

See, Hummingbird Electric Power has a system in which clients donate 1% of their electricity bill to a social activity they want to support. As of August 5, 2020, the service is affiliated with a total of 36 NPOs and NGOs groups working on various social issues such as poverty of children, education, social welfare, community development, natural environment protection, animal welfare and gender equality. Borderless House selected WELgee—an NPO that supports refuges—and Koichi Kuwahara—an individual who provides “Free Hugs” to help make the world a better place—as support recipients.

Borderless House CEO Seichi Lee said that Borderless House’s vision to create a multicultural society free of discrimination and prejudice matched the vision of both parties. “We are very happy to contribute to groups and individuals who tackle these various issues every day,” Lee said. “We can also act against global warming, so I think the mechanism of Hummingbird Electric Power is just great!”
