Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Music artists raise environmental consciousness using Japan’s nature

The Zurich Insurance Company’s official Japan YouTube channel, “Green Music produced by Zurich” engaged its community to suggest locations that hold personal significance. By selecting three such locales and enlisting the talents of three artists – Igaki Akiko, TOSHIKI HAYASHI (%C), and Masaki Kawasaki – the channel has combined original music and animation to create a series of “BGM” that highlights artistic beauty.

In the first release, “Lullaby by the Waterside” by Igaki Akiko, we are transported to the Niyodo River in Kochi Prefecture, where the enchanting “Niyodo Blue” colors the waters of the “Niko Pool.” This location, known for its exceptional water quality, is a testament to the efforts made to preserve its natural beauty, maintain the aquatic habitats, and educate the younger generation on the importance of rivers. Akiko’s music, inspired by a dreamlike journey alongside a girl who calls the river home, invites us to embark on a nostalgic, blue-hued adventure.

The second piece, “A World Swaying on the Water’s Surface” by TOSHIKI HAYASHI (%C), draws our attention to the serene beauty of Jodogahama in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture. Located within the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, the beach’s calm, transparent waters have earned it accolades such as “Top 100 Pleasant Beaches” and “88 Best Bathing Beaches in Japan.” In a collective effort to preserve this stunning seascape, environmental conservation initiatives – including the “National Park Clean Campaign” – are conducted regularly.

Lastly, “Breath of Life” by Masaki Kawasaki takes us on a journey to the lush island of Yakushima in Kumage District, Kagoshima Prefecture. As the first UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in Japan, the island hosts a diverse range of species, including the ancient Yakusugi and numerous endemic and endangered plants and animals. Kawasaki’s music encapsulates the preciousness of nature, a sentiment that he feels has grown in proportion to the years spent living in urban environments. His piece pays homage to the cycles of life and the interconnectedness of all living things, inspiring listeners to reconnect with the natural landscapes that exist within their hearts.

The channel will stream stream soothing music set in regions that carry out initiatives to tackle climate change and global environmental challenges. If you play music while you work or study, consider taking a break from chill beats and lofi music, and access their soothing playlist.
