Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Menotech to support women’s health during menopausal transition

As we age, it is natural to be concerned about one’s health. One of the biggest and unavoidable concerns for women is menopausal transition. Most women suffer from physical and mental issues between the ages of 45 to 55 though the symptoms are different for each person. As various symptoms appear, many people don’t realize that these are caused by menopause, and often endure it while feeling somewhat uncomfortable.

To address these menopausal concerns, Menotech, a type of Femtech that is the term combined with “Menopause” and ”Technology,” is expanding in Japan.

Low awareness of menopausal transition causes anxiety

The menopausal transition occurs as female hormones including estrogen and progesterone decline dramatically within about five years before and after the last period. The main symptoms are hot flashes and sweating. Some even suffer sleep deprivation due to sweating so much that they have to change clothes during the night. Other symptoms include physical ones such as dizziness, headache, palpitations, shortness of breath and fatigue, and mental ones such as irritability, anxiety and depression can also occur.

According to a survey targeting 1,250 women aged 20 to 69 conducted by Cross Marketing, about 25% of the women in their 40s and 50s suffer from symptoms caused by the menopausal transition. Also, about 30% of the women in their 40s are worried about the menopausal transition they will go through.

As another survey conducted by the government shows, only less than half of women aged 20 to 59 know about the symptoms of the menopausal transition. In Japanese society, menopause often remains a taboo subject, and many even hesitate to see a doctor.
