Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Lesbian sex services help women explore their desires

Although prostitution is illegal in Japan, loopholes and loose enforcement allow the sex trade here to prosper under the name “fuzoku.” While most such establishments cater to the needs of heterosexual men, in several recently published essays, women have reported on their life-changing experiences of using lesbian sex services. We look into who uses these services, and why.

Customers of all types and ages

One of the leaders in the lesbian fuzoku industry is “Lezukko Club.” It opened in 2007 and now runs a total of four stores in Tokyo and Osaka. The manager, Obou-san, has told Japanese media that customers vary in age from 20 years old to 70. Although it is advertised as a lesbian service, few guests consider themselves lesbian. Many customers are bisexual or heterosexual, and some have boyfriends or husbands. Others utilize the service to explore their sexuality.

Differences with men’s fuzoku

While fuzoku services for men tend to emphasize sexual acts, those for women focus more on the relationship and conversation. Obou says, “While there are a few cases of men’s fuzoku stores offering the option of dating before spending time at a hotel, the majority of lesbian fuzoku provide such courses. And most customers of Lezukko Club enjoy dating before getting into a sexual relationship.”

Lesbian fuzoku act as places to satisfy more than just sexual needs.

Helping customers learn to communicate their desires

Obou says that, at first, the majority of customers cannot explain what kind of services they want to receive. For instance, only a few people write in the message column to indicate to the employee what they want to do. However, most customers are able to convey their wishes after they visit a number of times.

With this educational function in mind, Obou’s book, which was published four years ago, is titled “Perhaps all women need lesbian fuzoku.”

The courage to explore one’s needs

For many customers, it is not easy to find the courage to visit lesbian fuzoku establishments. Some worry about being judged as perverted.

Obou says, “When I look at customers, I often feel that they have shown tremendous courage to utilize the service. When making a reservation for the first time, a number of people say, ‘Although I have known about the store for many years, I finally made up my mind to visit.’”

Lesbian fuzoku offer a place where any woman can be free from the pressures of conservative gender roles. Here, they can express their sexual desires, seek the warmth of another person, and find what they want from the bottom of their hearts.
