Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Kuradashi expands logistics services to tackle food loss in supply chains

Kuradashi Co., Ltd. (Kuradashi), a company actively tackling food loss and food waste in Japan, is taking bold steps to address food loss in the supply chain with its “Logistics Outsourcing Service.” Designed for businesses struggling with logistics challenges, this service will be supported by the launch of a dedicated website on January 16.

In July 2024, the company introduced an internal reorganisation, forming the Logistics Solutions Company to focus on logistics operations. This move aligns with its mid-term business plan unveiled in August 2024, which aims to transform Kuradashi into the “infrastructure for food loss reduction.” This strategy explores new opportunities in supply chain enhancements, including logistics services.

A 2023 market survey by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry highlighted the domestic B2C e-commerce market’s growth to ¥24.8 trillion, driven by increasing demand for food delivery. Meanwhile, the logistics industry faces mounting pressure due to the April 2024 implementation of work style reform laws, capping annual driver overtime to 960 hours. These constraints, collectively termed the “2024 Problem,” have exacerbated costs and driver shortages.

In response, Kuradashi’s partners, including food manufacturers and wholesalers, have shown growing demand for efficient, cost-effective logistics solutions. Challenges such as surplus inventory and food loss remain prevalent, amplifying the need for action.

Kuradashi’s extensive logistics expertise allows it to excel in managing three temperature zones and handling high-risk food items nearing expiration. These capabilities are now being extended to manufacturers and wholesalers.

With a nationwide network of over 150 partnered warehouses and its advanced logistics know-how, Kuradashi seeks to resolve clients’ logistics issues, minimise surplus inventory, and mitigate food loss. As part of its services, Kuradashi offers a “buyback” option for surplus inventory. This feature helps clients optimise stock levels, reduce storage costs, and further contribute to food loss reduction.

Kuradashi is guided by its mission to be a “socially good company” and its vision of becoming “the leading company in food loss reduction in Japan.” Through its e-commerce platform, “Social Good Market Kuradashi,” the company provides affordable access to food products that might otherwise go to waste. A portion of proceeds supports environmental conservation, disaster relief, and other social initiatives, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
