Come 18 March, Ecological Memes will be holding a four-day virtual global forum to promote the return of regenerative strength back to society. In this forum, “Emergence from AWAI: Regenerating Human-Nonhuman Relations,” Ecological Memes wants to connect the East and West by sharing with us the traditional Japanese wisdom of Awai.
The philosophy of Awai – unraveling the space between
The global pandemic has brought our systems to their knees, revealing vulnerabilities and insufficiencies. Our common senses were also reeled into question of what our relationship with others and nature is. The big questions thus remain: How can we restore our connection to others and ourselves? How can we be attentive to and cultivate the conditions for rich emergence beyond the human?
Ecological Memes suggests looking at the space of “awai,” describing it as an ancient Japanese concept of the plural, ambiguous, and non-dualistic space between selves. To overcome the urgent ecological crises, we can no longer depend on the dualistic models of our age. The answers no longer lie on either ends but in the space between.

Emergence from AWAI will be inviting key speakers from around the world, including a mountain priest from Shugendo, a philosopher of the Anthropocene, co-author of the book, Regenerative Leadership, artists, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and many more.
A key element to this is the bridging of the East and the West to find a future for coexistence. Furthermore, the forum will reveal wisdom to reconnect with nature, a partner we have put out of our minds for too long since the Industrial Revolution.
You can sign up for the online event here. Simultaneous interpretations are also available to provide both English and Japanese languages. The forum will be held on the video conference tool Zoom.
