Are you using a “My Straw” (Japanese slang for personal straw) that can be used repeatedly? In Japan, a new plastic law has come into effect in April 2022, which is expected to increasingly promote reducing and recycling plastic waste. Following this trend, Starbucks has also switched to paper straws for Frappuccinos. However, there are pros and cons to this change. One con of paper straws turns out to be that are not as durable. Let’s look at the variety of Japan’s My Straws to enhance your cafe time and home drinks.
GOODGLAS Panda -Glass straw-
Aiwa Industries, Inc. has launched a glass-made My Straw this summer. Not only is it an eco-friendly item that can be used repeatedly, but the cute panda design also makes drink time more enjoyable. Glass straws are popular because they are easy to clean. In addition, unlike paper straws, they do not transfer odors, so the straws don’t alter the taste of the drink. Each straw is handmade by glass artisans using the blown glass method.
MINOUYAKI -Ceramic straw-
This month, Katani Sangyo, a long-established gold leaf manufacturer, will start selling ceramic straws that can be washed and used repeatedly. The company has created products that are uniquely Japanese in its 120-year history. They believe artisanal crafts are a part of daily life in each era. Therefore, the straws were born out of a desire to create products that would be environmentally friendly and represent the modern era. Ceramic can also feature beautiful designs and is more soothing than metal to the touch.
SUTENAI -Silicone straw-
Aldenaide Inc. has launched a My Straw, a slightly different kind than an ordinary silicone straw. The main feature of this straw is that the sides can be opened to keep it clean without using a cleaning brush. If you have a straw that is difficult to clean, you may end up not using it at the end of the day because it’s a burden to wash it. With this straw, however, you don’t have to worry about that, and you can easily continue your My Straw habit!
Sipping a drink with your favorite straw makes you feel like drinking a special cup of coffee or tea. Try spending a wonderful break time with My Straw, which is a stylish and eco-friendly way to contribute to the environment.
