Zenbird to host event “Japanese Old Folk House Kominka and Sustainable Hints”

Another exciting media event is coming up on January 17th, 2023! This online event explores kominka, Japanese old folk houses, and how they are linked to sustainability. The event will be bilingual (English and Japanese). Immerse yourself in the world of traditional Japanese houses through a live stream event.

Kominka are old folk house usually built with traditional architectural techniques. Some over 100 years old, you can find various designs of kominka throughout Japan, often featuring wood pillars, clay walls and thatched roof. They are built with natural material that can be reused and recycled. Kominka are in fact structurally flexible buildings, as they can be rearranged and revitalized, and therefore, can be considered sustainable.

The demand and interest in renovating komika have been rising domestically and internationally. However, there are issues we need to tackle urgently, such as akiya (abandoned houses) due to the shrinking Japanese population and global warming caused by climate change.

Through this event, we invite you to think together about tips for living sustainably and what kind of dwellings you would like to leave to the next generation. This event features a presentation and an interactive workshop guided by a chairman of the Japan Kominka Association, Ryuichi Sugimoto.

Anyone interested in Japanese culture is welcome to join this special collaboration event.

Interactive workshop

Led by Sugimoto, the presenter, we will play a game that will challenge participants to think about the sustainable living we want to design, including housing for the future. What type of house do you want to see yourself and your family living in? What does it mean to live a happy or enriched life? An opportunity to listen to the opinions of participants from other countries and also to express your own.

Guest speaker: Ryuichi Sugimoto

Born in Shizuoka in 1967. Active chairman of the Japan Kominka Association and the head of the Tokyo Branch 1 of the association. Involved in efforts to solve the problem of vacant houses mainly in Tokyo, while keeping track of cases of kominka restoration nationwide. From the viewpoint of a first-class architect, he evaluates the earthquake resistance of buildings and implements measures to safely utilize and add value. Experiencing the evolution of the times through his own two-community residence. While examining future ways of working and living, devotes himself to work that contributes to the development of local communities. Passionate about working to preserve sustainable, recycling-oriented architecture for future generations.

・9.00 USD (or 1200 yen) to participate in the live event
・12.00 USD (or 1700 yen) to participate in the live event and access video recording of the event for a month

Zenbirdでは、2023年1月17日（火）にオンラインイベント「古民家から学ぶサステナビリティ～本当に豊かな暮らしとは？～」を開催します。本イベントでは、古民家とサステナビリティの関わりについて探っていきます。今回は、日本語・英語のバイリンガル開催となります。この機会に、日本の古民家の魅力を海外の参加者とともに感じてみませんか？

古民家とは、伝統的な建築技法で建てられた古くからの民家のことです。木柱、土壁、茅葺き屋根が特徴で、築100年以上のものもあり、日本各地で様々なデザインの古民家が見られます。再利用やリサイクルが可能な自然素材を用いて建てられたものが多く、構造的に柔軟性があり、改築や再生が可能なため、持続可能な建築物と考えられています。

古民家のリノベーションに対するニーズや関心は、国内外を問わず高まっています。しかし、日本の人口減少に伴う空き家問題や、気候変動による地球温暖化など、早急に取り組まなければならない課題もあります。

イベントを通じて、サステナブルに暮らすためのヒントや、どんな住居を次世代に残していきたいか、世界中の仲間と一緒に考えませんか。当日は、古民家再生協会理事長の杉本龍一氏によるプレゼンテーションと対話型ワークショップを予定しています。

杉本龍一 氏
1967年生まれ。静岡県出身。全国古民家再生協会理事長、古民家再生協会東京第一支部長を務め全国の古民家再生事例を把握しながら東京を中心に空き家課題解消への取り組みに携わる。一級建築士の観点から建物の耐震性を評価し安全に活用し付加価値を付ける施策を行いながら、自ら二地域居住により時代の進化を体験。これからの働き方、住まい方について検証しながら地域の発展に貢献する活動を行っている。持続可能な循環型建築を未来の子ども達に残す為の活動に情熱を注いでいる。
