Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Yaesu Project to embrace Edo spirit in developing the YNK area

The Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi (YNK) area has a rich history of Edo-period traditions and modern innovation. This historic region is often called Tokyo’s gateway, having been a cultural and economic hub since the Edo period (1603-1868). Now, the “Yaesu Project” seeks to honour this rich heritage while transforming the YNK area into a dynamic economic and cultural centre anchored by Tokyo Station.

During the Edo period, Nihonbashi became the starting point of the Five Highways, while Kyobashi served as the first bridge to Kyoto, enabling the flow of people, goods, and culture. This vibrant exchange spurred the growth of industries and arts, with Edo Castle drawing skilled artisans who crafted items like tatami mats, fusuma screens, and samurai armour. Many of these works were adorned with intricate paintings, making the region a hub for traditional Japanese art. Influential art movements, including the Kano school of painting and ukiyo-e masters like Hiroshige Utagawa, flourished here. Additionally, Nihonbashi’s fish market (the predecessor of Toyosu Market) and Kyobashi’s produce market laid the groundwork for Edo’s renowned culinary culture, including iconic dishes like sushi and soba.

Honouring tradition while building the future

The Yaesu Project aims to build on this historic foundation with a large-scale urban redevelopment plan that blends Edo traditions with modern advancements. The project focuses on boosting accessibility, cultural vibrancy, and economic growth, with two redevelopment zones at its core.

A standout feature of the Yaesu Project is its emphasis on connectivity. With six train stations and 28 railway lines, the area is an ideal transportation hub Future projects, such as the Haneda Airport Access Line and the Tokyo Sky Corridor, will further enhance its accessibility.

Community-focused initiatives and sustainability efforts, rooted in Edo’s circular economy principles, make the area appealing to both businesses and residents. It will be exciting to see the future YNK area as a vibrant centre for culture, commerce, and community.
