Kyoto’s age-old dashi manufacturer, Uneno Co., Ltd., renowned since its establishment in 1903 for its diverse range of additive-free dashi, is collaborating with the contemporary dog-focused brand, mellowbear. On August 21, these two seemingly disparate brands will jointly launch their debut product, the “Kunkun Fragrant Fish Furikake (Bonito flavor).”
A merger of tradition and modern sensibilities, the new furikake, which translates to a sprinkle-over food topping, is a fusion of Uneno’s stringent selection process and mellowbear’s emphasis on a sustainable and serene canine lifestyle. A notable ingredient is the “dashigara” or the residue left from Uneno’s premium additive-free dashi-making process. Not only fit for human consumption, this particular residue, with its reduced salt content, emerges as an optimal choice for dog meals.
But it’s not just about the nutritional value. The product, slow-dried at low temperatures, promises to release an aroma so potent that even the most discerning canine noses will find hard to resist. Whether looking to elevate a meal or to provide a nutrient boost during the sweltering summer days, this furikake offers a versatile solution for pet owners.
The inception of mellowbear in May 2022 came from a dog lover’s vision to harness food waste, culminating in the creation of handmade, human-grade dog treats. In contrast, Uneno’s legacy has spanned over 120 years, anchored in its dedication to crafting the finest additive-free dashi from domestic ingredients.
Their collaboration might seem unconventional at first glance: a contemporary brand primarily for dogs and a traditional human-centric dashi shop. Yet, their shared commitment to additive-free quality and a mutual belief in bridging the culinary experience between humans and dogs paved the way for this joint venture.
