Secondhand fashion festival “Junkan Fes” is returning to Kyoto in November, scheduled for Sunday, November 3. Tthe event will bring together a diverse array of activities aimed at encouraging reuse, circularity, and environmental responsibility.
Launched in 2022, the festival has quickly gained popularity, drawing more than 10,000 visitors to each event. At its core is the “¥0 Market,” where attendees can both donate and collect secondhand clothing for free, promoting a circular economy in everyday life. The festival is designed to be an engaging experience for all ages, with workshops, exhibitions, and stage performances that emphasize the importance of sustainability in a fun, accessible way. A series of food stands offering locally sourced, eco-friendly meals adds to the inclusive atmosphere (recommended you bring your own reusable containers and utensils!)
The event is especially focused on engaging Generation Z and those involved in the reuse industry, building a platform for new ideas and community initiatives that drive the circular economy among the youths. This year’s edition will also expand its offerings, with more significant involvement from student volunteers who are taking on a central role in planning and organizing. Students are encouraged to participate, with booth fees waived for those who wish to showcase their projects, developing the festival also as a space for experimentation and innovation.
The festival will also continue conducting social experiments, such as measuring the CO2 reductions achieved through clothing reuse. Organizers are encouraging attendees to bring reusable items, such as bags, bottles, and containers, to reduce waste. The event is free and open to the public, so mark that date November 3 on your calender today.
