Otsuka and Taiho Pharmaceutical Begin PTP Packaging Recycling Initiative

Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Taiho Pharmaceutical have embarked on a recycling initiative for PTP (press-through packaging) waste generated during the manufacturing of medical pharmaceuticals. Beginning in May 2024, this effort aims to significantly reduce environmental impact by recycling the PTP sheets used for packaging tablets and capsules.

The process involves separating the PTP sheets into plastic and aluminum components, which are then recycled. To further minimize carbon emissions, the initiative incorporates a modal shift to railway transportation, which is known for its lower CO2 output compared to traditional methods.

Previously, the PTP packaging waste from both Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Taiho Pharmaceutical factories was incinerated by contracted waste disposal companies. The heat energy generated during incineration was recovered, and the incineration ash was repurposed as a component in concrete raw materials. While this method provided some environmental benefits, the companies sought a more sustainable solution.

By collaborating, Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Taiho Pharmaceutical have achieved an efficient modal shift, enabling the recycling of all PTP polypropylene sheet packaging waste produced at their facilities. This approach is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 94% compared to incineration, and will see about 55 tons of waste recycled annually.

This initiative aligns with the Otsuka Group’s 2050 environmental vision, “Net Zero,” which seeks to eliminate all environmental burdens from its business activities. The group has identified key areas of focus: achieving carbon neutrality, promoting a circular economy, and maintaining water neutrality. This latest recycling effort represents a significant step towards these goals.
