Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

No more plastic waste with reusable food wrap Good Wrap!

Single-use plastic food wrap offers great convenience when you’re packing your food, but that doesn’t stop the fact that it’s an unsustainable option. A new organic cotton-based food wrap “Good Wrap!” was released in May, as a multi-use, eco-friendly alternative to the conventional kitchen staple. Good Wrap! is produced by a group of sustainable-minded creators called Planners, which believes that reusable food wrap can become a new plastic-free norm.

This reusable wrap is made with organic cotton or hemp coated with beeswax, organic jojoba oil and tree resin. Beeswax and jojoba oil are known to be naturally antibacterial. It is scientifically proven that this effect lasts for more than six months, even when the wrap is used every day.

To use the wrap, you can simply mold it with your hands as the warmth of your hands easily activates the cling factor. In addition to covering plates and bowls, Good Wrap! works great for wrapping vegetables and sandwiches. Moreover, thanks to its sturdiness and pliability, you can mold this wrap into an instant serving dish for finger food.

The wrap can be washed gently with your hands or with a soft-surfaced wet sponge, then air dried before reuse. Taking care of your wrap this way helps it last more than a year.

Good Wrap! products also address food loss and food waste problems. One example is the wraps’ colors, which come from the residues of natural ingredients harvested in Japan: mugwort green, cherry blossom pink, okara cream yellow and perilla bright yellow. For example, mugwort green comes from the boiled water used to make mugwort rice cake. Okara is the leftover pulp from producing tofu, and okara cream yellow is made by dying the wrap with this soybean by-product.

Furthermore, the team at Planners supports the “Zero Hunger and Zero Food Loss” project by the Japan Association for the World Food Programme. This project contributes to the World Food Programme’s action to provide meals and snacks to school children in Africa. For each sale of Good Wrap!, Planners will donate the value of one school meal to the association.

Good Wrap! made a good start during its pre-sale crowdfunding in April, which exceeded its ¥150,000 target by 129%. Moreover, many supporters shared their excitement about this colorful and eco-friendly alternative to disposable plastic wrap. Supported by these ecologically-conscious consumers, this reusable food wrap is expected to become a widespread new sustainable option.
