Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Discover Japan’s sustainable beauty brand “uka” for all your needs

Are you looking for a better way to consider sustainability, including environmental and animal welfare? Many of you may have started by switching your daily products, such as skincare, haircare, body care and meals, to more eco-friendly and ethical options.

In Japan, there is a brand that supports these sustainable practices, called “uka.” We have talked about their vegan nail polish before, but uka actually offers a wide range of services as a comprehensive beauty care brand. Let’s take a closer look at this brand!

uka’s representative beauty products: vegan nail polish and ECOCERT nail oil

uka’s representative product is nail polish, many of which are vegan. For the classic colors of red and beige, there are eight shades with slightly different tones available, making it easy to find a favorite color. Additionally, the newest uka pedicure study line features gentle, natural colors that give a glimpse of traditional Japanese hues.

Another popular product is nail oil, which has been a best-seller since its launch in 2009. It is made primarily from organic plants and has received the international organic certification ECOCERT. Besides using it on nails, you can also apply it to your shoulders and neck to refresh yourself. One variety has a uniquely Japanese scent of yuzu (Japanese citrus) and hinoki (Japanese cypress.) A vegan perfume with the same fragrance is also available.

Beauty salons offering comprehensive beauty treatments all in one place

uka operates several salons across Tokyo and Osaka to support people of all ages and genders in their beauty goals. Notably, Roppongi and Hiroo branches provide a full range of services, including hair, nail, headspa, eyelash and esthetic treatments, all in one place.

The uka’s salon features henna coloring. They source organic henna from Ishigaki island, Okinawa Prefecture, which is gentle on the skin and the environment. uka is committed to a sustainable approach to beauty, although some henna products still contain chemicals for color enhancement.

As some people are concerned about henna tinting their hair orange, uka blends it with organic indigo sourced from the same farm, allowing for darker coloring.

A sustainable café serving healthy meals that support your inner beauty

uka also runs a cafe called ukafe next to the Roppongi salon with a focus on sustainability and traceability. They source their vegetables from an organic farm, including their own. Even the sauces and dressings are homemade to avoid artificial flavorings. The menu changes regularly with gluten-free and vegan options. Furthermore, they implement environmentally friendly methods, such as using compost in their own vegetable garden.

uka not only takes care of your outer appearance but also your inner well-being. If you happen to be in Tokyo, give it a try!
