Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

“Ally Map” to connect LGBTQ+ patients with healthcare providers for stress-free visits

In today’s world where compassion needs to meet innovation, a Japanese company pioneers a digital map to support LGBTQ+ individuals seeking healthcare solace.

Novartis Pharma launched the “Ally Map” in September, introducing healthcare providers dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ patients. The map is accessible on Novartis Healthcare, their portal for the general public, including patients, and on “DR’s NET,” for healthcare professionals.

Ally Map promotes LGBTQ+ friendly medical care

The Ally Map is one of Novartis’ initiatives aimed at realizing a society where everyone can receive fair and ordinary healthcare. In collaboration with the “Nijiiro Doctors” general incorporated association, they have taken on the challenge of visualizing “Ally doctors.” This effort is part of the “Marutto Inclusive Hospital Implementation Support Project,” addressing a long-standing need expressed by individuals.

According to several surveys conducted in Japan, it is estimated that around 3-9% of the population identifies as LGBTQ+. Novartis Pharma has been actively working to increase the number of allies among healthcare professionals. The effort is driven by the desire to reduce instances where LGBTQ+ individuals have uncomfortable experiences or face challenges in receiving appropriate medical care.

In August 2021, the company organized the first lecture for healthcare professionals on the theme of “LGBTQ+ and Healthcare.” Responding to the demand from participants, they have conducted this lecture series four times, with approximately 800 healthcare professionals participating in total. They plan to hold a webinar this month.

The Ally Map, publicly available on Novartis Healthcare for the general public, is an “Ally Declaration Physician Map” that allows users to search for physicians who have declared themselves as allies. The company hopes the map aids the general public, including LGBTQ+ individuals, in seeking medical care, recognizing that the support range may differ for each physician.

The Ally Map, available on “DR’s NET” for healthcare professionals, is a physician-exclusive map aimed at promoting medical collaboration and information exchange among doctors. Additionally, on “DR’s NET,” e-learning content for healthcare professionals to learn about LGBTQ+ topics has been released. The e-learning content, introduced alongside traditional lecture-style learning, aims to improve user convenience and support the workstyle reform of healthcare professionals.

Educational support for medical professionals

In the future, Novartis plans to add more learning content. They will also introduce “Implementation Support Tools” and facility case studies to provide concrete guidance on what facilities can do (scheduled for the end of the year). Furthermore, healthcare professionals who have watched all required learning content, passed all confirmation tests, and the final comprehensive test will be eligible. Those who agree to be featured will be added to the Ally Map.

In fostering a culture where understanding and support thrive, innovations such as the Ally Map stand as a beacon of progress. They symbolize a commitment to a healthcare landscape that embraces diversity and inclusivity. Above all, it embraces the unwavering dignity of every individual seeking care.
