Amazon Japan has launched its Climate Pledge Friendly program to help consumers more easily identify sustainable products while shopping online. The initiative began on October 23, and is available on both Amazon.co.jp and Amazon Business, the e-commerce giant’s platform for business customers. The program aims to highlight products with sustainable features, ranging from recycled or organic materials to enhanced energy efficiency. All products in the program have been certified by trusted third-party organizations, making it easier for consumers to make environmentally-conscious decisions.
According to a survey commissioned by Amazon and conducted by research firm OnePoll, about 58% of Japanese online shoppers prioritize products that minimize their environmental or social impact. In Japan, over 160,000 products are included in the Climate Pledge Friendly program, each evaluated by at least one of more than 40 reliable certification bodies. These include the Global Recycle Standard (GRS), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and Eco Mark, among others. These certifications ensure that shoppers are informed about the sustainability attributes of the products they are purchasing.
The Climate Pledge Friendly label, represented by a leaf icon, will appear on product pages across a broad range of categories, including beauty, fashion, household items, electronics, and office supplies. Customers can click on the icon to learn more about each product’s sustainability credentials. Amazon has also launched a dedicated webpage where shoppers can explore all Climate Pledge Friendly products and learn about the different certification standards.
The program is also available to users of Amazon Business, which has already operated an Eco Mark-certified store since 2021. The Climate Pledge Friendly initiative further expands the range of sustainability-certified products available, providing more options for companies and individual business owners looking to minimize their environmental footprint.
Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program has been rolled out in other markets, including the United States, Europe, Australia, Mexico, and Brazil, where over 1.4 million products are now listed under the initiative. Jasper Cheung, President of Amazon Japan, emphasized the importance of this effort: “We aim to be a more sustainable company, not just for our customers, but for everyone involved in our business and for the planet. The Climate Pledge Friendly program empowers our customers in Japan, including businesses and individuals, to make more informed, sustainable choices.”
