Many women worry about menstruation. This includes physical, emotional and what to wear for potential leaks. Even when prepared, leaks can still occur. Removing blood stains is a hassle, isn’t it? Here are hacks for removal, plus a handy Japanese item!
Easy tips to remove blood stains
Some household items can help to remove blood stains.
1. Cold water
We often assume that hot water is more effective in removing stains, but when it comes to blood stains, the opposite is true. Hot water can actually set the stain, as it’s a protein-based stain, making it more difficult to remove. If the stain is fresh, washing it in cold water can help get rid of it. If you can’t wash it immediately, gently blot it with a wet cloth to make it easier to remove later.
2. Salt
Blood stains are acidic, so you can remove them by neutralizing them with salt, which is alkaline. Mix two tablespoons of salt with one tablespoon of cold water, and apply it to cover the stain. After 10 minutes, gently blot it with a wet cloth to remove the salt paste along with the stain. This might not be effective for old stains, but it is still worth trying.
3. Contact lens solution
The grime that sticks to contact lenses is often protein-based, so cleaning solutions contain enzymes that break down these proteins. Therefore, they are also effective against blood stains. Apply contact lens solution directly onto the bloodstained area and let it sit for approximately one hour. Then, wash it as you normally would. It should come out unless the stain is old.
4. Neutral detergent or oxygen bleach using a toothbrush
To get rid of stubborn blood stains, you might want to try using a neutral detergent like dish soap, or oxygen bleach. Place a cloth underneath the stain, then gently scrub it with one of these using a toothbrush. Keep in mind that while oxygen bleach is milder than chlorine bleach, it can still potentially cause damage or discoloration, so be sure to check the care tag before trying this method.

5. Blood stain remover
There are various feminine care products you can use to get rid of blood stains. In Japan, blood stain removers are commonly used to make the process even easier.
For instance, a popular brand called Bè-A, known for its absorbent shorts, offers a laundry powder specifically designed for blood stain removal. It’s easy to use. Just add one gram of the powder to one liter of water below 40°C. Soak the stained clothes or underwear for about 30-60 minutes, then wash them in a washing machine as usual. Be sure not to soak them longer than recommended to avoid any damage to your clothes.
It can be quite a challenge to hand wash clothing when you’re not feeling well physically and mentally during your period. Items like this, which only require soaking, can ease your concerns and contribute to improving women’s wellness.
