Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

Savoring diversity with Halal-certified Freedom Ramen cup noodles

Each year, over 120 billion cups of instant noodles are consumed globally, a testament to their convenience, taste, and affordability. However, for many in Japan, religious beliefs, personal philosophies, or allergies can prohibit the enjoyment of these quick meals.

Enter “Freedom Ramen,” a halal-certified cup noodle produced by Yoshinao Tanaka from GRIT CAPITAL PTE LTD in Singapore and the recent recipient of the Good Design Award. This product stands as a testament to inclusivity in the food industry, seeking to accommodate those with dietary restrictions and religious beliefs.

The design of Freedom Ramen’s packaging is centered around clear, visible information regarding its ingredients, ensuring that individuals with food restrictions or travelers who may not read Japanese can easily identify its compliance with their dietary needs. Logos prominently indicate the product’s halal certification, 100% plant-based composition, and lack of meat, allowing Muslims, vegetarians, and vegans to make informed choices without scrutinizing ingredient lists.

As the product gains recognition through its Good Design Award, plans are in motion to expand its availability and continue utilizing product design as a tool to improve brand image and foster a more diverse culinary landscape.

Currently, Freedom Ramen is available in three flavors: spicy miso, seafood, and Japanese curry. Freedom Ramen can be found in various locations, including accommodation facilities like the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel and Hyatt Place Kyoto, local governments like Toyota City, drugstores such as Satsudora, offices like THE DECK, universities including the International Christian University, mosques like Tokyo Camii, and online stores like Green Culture, Gifts from the North, and V Cook Super.
