Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Green Key certifies Westin Tokyo as an eco-conscious hotel

The Westin Tokyo has been awarded the international eco-label “Green Key,” which recognises environmentally conscious hotels and restaurants.

The Green Key certification is a globally recognised eco-label granted to establishments demonstrating environmental responsibility and sustainable operations. With over 6,000 certified facilities in more than 70 countries, it sets high standards for the tourism and hospitality industry. Established in 1994 by the Foundation for Environmental Education, headquartered in Denmark, the certification assesses facilities based on 13 categories with 75 mandatory and 75 optional criteria. This recognition identifies The Westin Tokyo as a member of sustainability and environmental protection.

The Westin Tokyo is committed to sustainability, focusing on reducing its environmental impact while enhancing guest wellness. Its efforts include minimising food waste, conserving water and energy, and offering vegetarian and vegan dining options. These initiatives highlight the hotel’s dedication to building a sustainable society.

The hotel recycles over 80% of its waste through a partnership with Ebisu Garden Place. It employs the AI-based “Winnow Waste Monitor” to analyse and reduce food waste, while flow restrictors on water outlets aim to cut water usage by 15% by 2025. Guests are encouraged to participate in conservation through the Green Programme, which reduces laundry demands. Eco-certified detergents and the replacement of plastic items with sustainable alternatives further contribute to its green initiatives.

Beyond environmental measures, the hotel supports social sustainability through vegetarian and vegan menu options and the adoption of organic, fair trade, and locally sourced ingredients. Gender equality is promoted with events for International Women’s Day, equal opportunities, and support for parental leave and career development, particularly for female employees. The Westin Tokyo’s efforts reaffirm its role as a leader in eco-conscious hospitality.

We hope to see more hotels take Westin Tokyo and others’ lead in obtaining the Green Key certification,  commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.
