ecoeat opens first food waste reduction store in Takarazuka City

ecoeat is a retail brand with a focus on food loss reduction, and it opened its first Takarazuka branch. Located in Hyogo Prefecture, the outlet aims to promote resource circulation by selling food items that would otherwise be discarded.

The store operates on a model that redistributes surplus stock and items near their expiry dates at fair prices. It treats these items as valuable products rather than waste, which is a challenge manufacturers and distributors face. The stores tries to meet the cost-saving needs of consumers, offering snacks, beverages, instant meals, seasonings, and frozen foods.

According to estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of the Environment, food loss in Japan reached approximately 4.64 million tonnes in fiscal year 2023. This volume equates to roughly 37 kilograms of food waste per person annually. The economic loss is estimated at 4 trillion yen, with associated carbon dioxide emissions reaching 10.5 million tonnes.

ecoeat focuses on non-standard products and inventory stagnation to tackle the food loss issue. The Sakasegawa location was selected for its high foot traffic and proximity to residential areas in the Hanshin region, intending to make sustainable shopping a routine activity.

The opening of the Takarazuka Sakasegawa branch is also a rebranding effort, and the company plans to roll out the new logo across all stores and platforms.
