Aichi Prefecture seeks startups for environmental innovation project

Aichi Prefecture has launched a call for applications for the 2026 Aichi Environmental Innovation Project. The initiative seeks startups and businesses to propose technologies and ideas that address environmental challenges, including carbon neutrality and resource circulation. Applications are open until 17 July 2026, with the prefecture aiming to select four projects for implementation.

The project focuses on six key themes. These include energy creation and utilisation models, carbon recycling through greenhouse gas absorption, and circular economy business models that use regional resources. Other categories cover sustainable society models, biodiversity value visualisation, and general environmental solutions. The programme aims to foster advanced technologies that originate in Aichi and can be implemented within the region’s industrial landscape.

Selected participants receive comprehensive support to commercialise their projects, including financial assistance of up to 2.2 million yen per year and matching opportunities with local companies in Aichi. The prefecture also provides access to demonstration fields and expert advice on intellectual property, market needs, and roadmap development. Support is scheduled to continue until March 2029, provided the projects show viable progress.

The Aichi Environmental Innovation Consortium serves as a platform for collaboration. It consists of members from industry, government, academia, and finance. This network facilitates the implementation of projects by sharing information and fostering partnerships between startups and established regional businesses. All applicants will have their project summaries shared with consortium members to encourage further collaboration.

This initiative builds on previous successes within the prefecture. Past projects include the development of recycled carbon fibre supply chains, AI-driven waste sorting robots, and systems that convert food waste into chemical raw materials without emitting carbon dioxide.
