Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Post-coronavirus acrylic partitions turn into artistic displays

Hotel Granvia Kyoto has unveiled a unique display of objects made from repurposed acrylic partitions, once used to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. These new creations encapsulate remnants and imperfect items from traditional crafts, offering a fresh take on Kyoto’s rich artisanal heritage.

The exhibition, which began on October 18, is a collaboration between the hotel and advanced recycling initiatives from Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. The items, crafted using recycled acrylic resin, seem to make the encapsulated craft pieces appear as if they’re floating, thanks to techniques from Mizuho Chemical Co.

The hotel has long supported local craft-making. Working with “Kyo-Densan-Biz,” a traditional industry support center founded by Kyoto Prefecture, it often showcases traditional crafts in its lobby. This project is an innovative way to repurpose unwanted materials into items of value, emphasizing sustainability in art and business. Hotel Granvia Kyoto continues its dedication to fostering a sustainable future through such initiatives.
