Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Sustainable Cosmetic Award announces 2023’s best beauty products

Around this time of the year, the Sustainable Cosmetic Award annually announces the best beauty products, starting in 2019. The organization assesses the sustainability of cosmetics thoroughly, considering factors such as raw materials, CO2 emissions, waste during production and packaging. Discover last year’s award-winning beauty products here, and let’s have a look at this year’s champions.

Gold Award: Kruhi ALWAYS NEW BALM

Kruhi, which won the Gold Award last year for its shampoo and treatment, has been selected again for its multi-purpose balm. Kruhi is based in Kagoshima Prefecture and utilizes a local specialty, passion fruits. Around 10% of the total production of approximately 15 tons typically goes to waste due to poor quality. Kruhi aims to prevent wastage and support local farmers by upcycling these passion fruits into cosmetics.

The award-winning balm comes in a compact recycled aluminum tin with two different colored balms. The red balm, crafted from roselle and passion fruits, helps firm the skin, while the green one, made with shell ginger, promotes vitamin C absorption and collagen production, hydrating the skin.

Kruhi was not only attributed to its sustainability efforts, such as reducing food waste and creating employment opportunities for local economic growth but also to the high quality of its skincare products.

Silver Award: PALSEYLLE Shampoo Bar

The Silver Award went to PALSEYLLE’s amino acid shampoo bar that is gentle on both hair and scalp. As this product has a unique texture and forms well, judges commented this product can attract the interest of those who have never been interested in solid shampoo before.

PALSEYLLE is based in Fukuoka Prefecture and utilizes its specialty of Japanese herb called Shiso. During the product development, this brand collaboratively worked with experienced local Shiso farmers, and they accomplished a transition to organic Shiso farming, which was conventionally considered a big challenge.

This brand currently grows Shiso and other raw materials for traceability at their farm and conducts all the production processes by themselves. The spicy sweet fragrance made with various essential oils can refresh your senses.

Bronze Award: Sofistance Advanced Face Serum

Sofistance, which won the Bronze Award, focuses on Japan’s traditional fermentation techniques. The key ingredient is rice ferment filtrate aged for five years. The top of a sake brewery with 200 years of history crafted it by hand. This brand considers that inheriting tradition to the next generation is also an essential part of sustainability, and this concept garnered sympathy.

The winning product, Advanced Face Serum, is made with the essence of Yuzu citrus and an apple and the rice ferment filtrate, making it a distinctly Japanese vegan skincare item.

What makes this brand stand out is not only the ingredients but also other sustainable practices. This brand carefully selects factories that contribute to reducing CO2 emission and water quality conservation and also uses recycled paper from discarded clothing, and wooden lids.
