Silver Award: Fermenstation Rice Hand Mist

Fermenstation, a B-corp-certified cosmetic company, produces hand mist using ethanol made from organic rice. The hand mist is 100% plant-based, which includes organic rice, water, malt and essential oil.

Fermenstation cooperates with local farmers and utilizes fallow rice fields in Iwate Prefecture to revitalize local agriculture and protect the environment. Moreover, this company strives to achieve zero waste and a circular economy. It reuses the manufacturing waste that is generated in the fermentation process for cosmetics and as feed for livestock, and then their manure is used as fertilizer. For those looking for a highly traceable, more gentle hand mist, this COSMOS-certified mist is worth a try.

Bronze Award: RUHAKU Gettou Lotion, Do Organic Cleansing Milk and Lycopure Face Serum

The three products won the Bronze award. The first one is RUHAKU Gettou lotion. Gettou, an herb growing in Okinawa prefecture, is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. RUHAKU combined it with discarded umibudou (sometimes called green caviar or sea grapes) stalks, which is another of Okinawa’s specialties, and it created a thick lotion. This product is 100% made from natural ingredients and can be used for sensitive skin.

The second winner is Do Organic’s cleansing milk. This company has developed the product to solve the problem that conventional organic and milk cleansers are not able to remove makeup sufficiently. This cleansing milk is made from plant-derived ingredients, mainly organic brown rice and black beans, and is certified by Cosmos.

The last recipient is Lycopure Face Serum. This serum is made from irregularly-shaped tomatoes that cannot be sold at grocery stores. As the company was originally an engineering firm, it uses energy from biomass power generation to heat its greenhouses and extracts the carbon dioxide produced during power generation, providing it to the tomatoes.
