The SAVE FOOD programme, originally launched in August 2021, is designed to minimise food waste at the retail level. Under this system, food items such as doughnuts, cakes, and sandwiches are sold at a 20 per cent discount starting approximately three hours before store closing, depending on the day’s inventory levels.

Until recently, customers could only access these sustainable options by physically visiting the counter. Adding it to the Mobile Order & Pay interface allows users to check stock availability and purchase rescue-food items remotely via their smartphones.

Furthermore, Starbucks Japan donates a portion of the proceeds from the SAVE FOOD programme to Musubie (the Japan National Children’s Cafeteria Support Center), an approved non-profit organisation. Since the 2022 fiscal year, these donations have focused on building essential networks between independent children’s cafeterias. The funding has already yielded tangible results in regional revitalisation.
