Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

PHAPHIC showcases Banshu and Bingo craftsmanship in Kyoto

The fabric label “PHAPHIC” will host its first exhibition titled “WHERE ARE YOU FROM? – The Birthplace of Fabric” at the MON Gallery near Nijo Castle in Kyoto from January 25 to February 9. This event will feature original products including cushions made from Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture) and Bingo (Hiroshima Prefecture) fabrics.

Founded in 2024, PHAPHIC blends the ideas of “fabric” and “graphic” to showcase a fresh approach to Japanese textiles. Led by a designer with an advertising background, the label celebrates Japan’s regional craftsmanship. Its philosophy, “From local producers to comfortable living,” highlights the heritage and creativity of Japanese fabric producers.

The exhibition will present three fabric series from Banshu and Bingo, displayed as interior products such as cushions. Banshu fabrics are created using the “sakizome” pre-dyeing technique, which provides vibrant colours and soft textures. Bingo denim is known for its rich indigo hues achieved through reactive dyeing, offering durability and elegance. These premium fabrics are designed for long-lasting use, with cushions featuring high-quality feathers from Mie Prefecture.

Following the Japanese principle of “mottainai“, PHAPHIC repurposes surplus materials from cushion production into limited-edition tote bags, available exclusively at the exhibition and pop-up events.

Banshu’s collection is produced at a rate of just 20 metres per day and features the “phenomenon” pattern. This organic design, inspired by paint-pouring techniques, is expressed through intricate jacquard weaving. The fabric is the result of close collaboration between artisans and designers.

The “SIGNITURE” denim series is created in Bingo, a renowned denim-producing area in Hiroshima. This series combines traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. Known for its superior quality, trusted by European luxury brands, the series includes PHAPHIC’s distinct double-stitched seams in unique colours.

Visitors of the exhitbition are invited to explore the artistry and stories embedded within each creation through PHAPHIC’s unique perspective.
