Discovering a Sustainable Future from Japan

MammaBaby’s new upcycle kits for zero waste, challenging norms

Petit Philosophe Co., Ltd., a certified B Corporation, is set to release an innovative upcycle kit under its MammaBaby brand, known for its organic and vegan products tailored for medical institutions, starting December 1. The launch marks a significant step in the brand’s “Zero Waste Challenge,” an initiative dedicated to repurposing containers that would typically face disposal.

Since 2021, MammaBaby’s challenge has successfully reduced waste. The initiative cut disposal rates from 13% to 3% by reusing containers previously discarded due to stringent quality standards and achieved a zero percent disposal rate by utilizing containers with color inconsistencies from the manufacturing process.

The new phase of the project focuses on upcycling containers that were destined to be discarded by other brands. This collaborative effort between MammaBaby and container manufacturers will produce special kits containing original stickers and refills, allowing consumers to experience the joy of upcycling firsthand.

Each unique kit features variously colored and shaped bottles, turning potential waste into an opportunity for creative design. The initiative aligns with MammaBaby’s mission to provide environmentally friendly experiences, encouraging children to engage in sustainable practices from an early age.

The Japanese container industry often discards large quantities of containers for minor imperfections, following strict quality standards. MammaBaby’s approach challenges this norm, advocating for the utilization of these resources from both a human and ecological perspective.

Founded in 1944, MammaBaby has a long history of delivering high-quality, environmentally conscious products to medical institutions. The brand originated from the founder’s commitment to providing the same level of quality products, developed for medical use, to all children. This was inspired by the personal experience of the founder’s daughter, who was born with severe atopic dermatitis.

The launch of the upcycle kit by MammaBaby not only represents a significant advancement towards more circular practices within the industry.
