Fermenstation, a research and development startup transforming what others see as waste into valuable resources, has introduced “Apple Sanitizer,” a sanitizer spray created through the fermentation of apple pulp left over from apple juice and cider production. Currently, the product is available for pre-sale on the crowdfunding platform, Makuake.
The genius behind “Apple Sanitizer” lies in its environmentally conscious creation. Each 200ml bottle contains the equivalent of about 1.3 apples’ worth of pulp, a clever way to reduce waste. With no added fragrances, the sanitizer emits a gentle, natural apple scent, making it ideal for use in various settings.
Fermenstation’s innovative technology extracts the scent directly from the apples themselves, avoiding the use of artificial fragrances or additives. The result is a simple sanitizer, composed only of ethanol and water, that safely disinfects kitchen surfaces, children’s toys, pet supplies, and more.
At the heart of “Apple Sanitizer” is the concept of the “circular” narrative, emphasizing the importance of understanding the background behind a product and its connection to society. The sanitizer is designed to create a cycle at various stages, from sourcing the apple pulp to utilizing the byproducts of the fermentation process.
Apples that don’t meet appearance standards are repurposed for processed products like apple juice and cider. The leftover apple pulp, typically treated as industrial waste, is collected by Fermenstation and fermented into ethanol, maximizing resource utilization.
The fermentation residue generated during manufacturing is repurposed as feed for cows and chickens, ensuring the byproduct’s nutrients are not wasted. In turn, the manure from these animals is used as fertilizer for growing crops in fields and paddy fields.
Since 2009, Fermenstation has been dedicated to transforming unused resources into valuable materials through the power of fermentation, fostering a circular society. Embodying the company’s philosophy, “Apple Sanitizer” serves as a testament to the belief that purchasing and using products is a way to engage with society. Fermenstation hopes customers will appreciate the story behind the product, the people involved, and the joy of circulating resources.
