ASTRA FOOD PLAN Co., Ltd. has announced its acceptance into the “Fiscal 2023 Saitama Prefecture Circular Economy Business Creation Subsidy” program. This propels their mission-impacting initiative, the “Saitama Food Circular Economy Project,” in Saitama Prefecture.
The initiative ties together diverse threads of the food production and consumption system in Saitama. Partnering with JA Irumano, a local agricultural cooperative in Kawagoe City, the project will harness the potential of surplus produce – non-standard or weather-impacted – from regional farmers. Utilizing ASTRA’s specialized Superheated Steam Roasting Machine, these surplus products undergo a transformative process into a nutrient-rich food powder, christened “Gururiko.”
In collaboration with Nihon Pharmaceutical University and other research entities in the prefecture, this newly birthed food powder is subjected to meticulous analysis. The goal is to discern the nutritional and ingredient-specific properties of Gururiko, which could pave the way for novel, health-centric food solutions.
But the project doesn’t stop at food production. In an exciting move, the Women’s Nutrition University and local businesses join forces to develop high-value recipes that incorporate Gururiko™.
The end-product of this circular economic model is poised to reach the plates of consumers across Saitama Prefecture. Through alliances with school meal providers, the Fujimi City Chamber of Commerce, and other local food businesses, these specially crafted, sustainable food products will be sold and served to the public.
Beyond just sales, ASTRA FOOD PLAN is also committed to educational outreach. They’re planning collaborations with elementary and junior high schools in Fujimi City, home to ASTRA’s headquarters, to provide learning opportunities around school meals and food education.
