Novotel Nara has obtained the Green Key international environmental certification in March, recognising the hotel’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism sector.
Green Key is a global eco-label managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, based in Denmark. The certification is awarded to establishments that voluntarily apply and undergo a rigorous third-party audit. The evaluation process covers various criteria, including environmental management, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and water conservation.
Novotel Nara focuses on reducing its environmental footprint while supporting the local economy. Key measures include the efficient use of energy and water resources to lower carbon dioxide emissions. The facility also prioritises the reduction, reuse, and recycling of waste.
In its dining operations, the hotel actively sources local and seasonal produce, as well as organic and fair-trade products. It maintains a strict policy against using food derived from endangered species. Furthermore, the hotel prohibits the sale or display of historical and archaeological artefacts to protect cultural heritage. Staff members receive regular environmental education and training to ensure these standards are maintained.
Novotel Nara also participates in the Ocean Program, a marine conservation initiative conducted by the Novotel brand in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature. As part of this programme, hotel staff perform monthly cleaning activities at the Saho River near the property.
