Jimoty Spot Matsubara to make second-hand drop-off as easy as shopping

Jimoty Inc. is collaborating with Matsubara City, opening the Jimoty Spot Matsubara Store today. Located within the Seven Park Amami shopping mall, this facility marks the first public-private reuse hub in Matsubara City. The collaboration has potential to reduce municipal waste and promote a circular economy by creating an infrastructure for the exchange of unwanted household goods.

The new facility operates on a model designed to remove the friction often associated with second-hand exchange. Residents can bring unwanted items such as furniture and electrical appliances to the spot without the need for prior reservations or disposal fees. This system is different from households disposing of bulky waste, which it typically involves purchasing collection tickets and scheduling pickups.

Once dropped off, these items are made available to other residents who can view product information via the local community information service Jimoty or visit the store to inspect the goods in person. Items are offered either for free or at a nominal price, ensuring that functional products remain in circulation rather than ending up in landfill.

It is a strategic decision to locate the spot within Seven Park Amami, a major commercial complex with capacity for more than 2,000 vehicles. It integrates the reuse station into a location frequented for daily shopping, so as to make the act of dropping off heavy furniture or appliances as convenient as a regular shopping trip.

This opening follows a cooperation agreement on reuse signed between Jimoty Inc. and Matsubara City in March 2023. Jimoty has set a target to open over 300 similar spots nationwide by 2030, aiming to establish reuse as a standard social infrastructure.
