Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Euglena and EcoCeres partner to drive adoption of biofuels in Japan

Euglena Co., Ltd., a leader in the biofuel industry, has formed a strategic partnership with Hong Kong-based EcoCeres, Inc. to promote the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, or HVO) in Japan. The partnership, formalized on November 18, 2024, aims to make SAF and HVO more accessible in Japan’s aviation and transportation sectors, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

EcoCeres, a leading provider of renewable fuels, has made strides in developing technologies with biofuels worldwide. With a production capacity of 350,000 tons of SAF and HVO annually and another 420,000-ton production facility under construction in Malaysia, EcoCeres is poised to contribute to Japan’s growing demand for cleaner fuel alternatives.

Euglena, renowned for its work with microalgae-based oils, has pioneered biofuel production in Japan, using both used cooking oil and microalgae. Its “Susteo” fuel, which can be used across all types of mobility, has already found a footing in land, sea, and air transportation. The company is also pushing forward with research into large-scale production of microalgae-derived oil to meet the growing needs of the biofuel sector.

Through their combined expertise, Euglena and EcoCeres plan to expand the use of SAF and HVO in Japan. By leveraging EcoCeres’ supply of neat HVO and Euglena’s ability to adapt these fuels to Japanese standards, the partnership is expected to drive greater adoption of the fuels.
