Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Like a temple resident! Book a 700-Year-Old temple “TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ”

Hourinji Temple in Chiyoda-cho, Gunma Prefecture, has opened “TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ,” an accommodation facility that offers a modern version of a temple stay. The temple, which has been around for 700 years, will allow guests to live like a temple resident in a refurbished annex that has become vacant. The stay offers a chance for guests to reset their minds and bodies in a peaceful and quiet environment, just 90 minutes away from the city center.

In a recent international survey on travel, 47% of Japanese travelers answered that they want to prioritize wellness and retreat. Temples in Japan, including Hourinji, are expected to play a role in attracting foreign travelers who seek Japanese culture and rural experiences. TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ aims to be an example of utilizing vacant properties for recovery in the tourism industry.

TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ features a private space for rent, including a kitchen and living room, as well as two divisible tatami rooms, a shower room, and a washing machine. The temple also provides various decorations and experiences, such as coffee with a Zen twist, temple service experience, and a Zen meditation experience. Guests can also enjoy an exclusive nighttime light-up of the temple grounds.

The facility can accommodate up to 6 guests, and up to 8 guests for corporate training and retreats. For reservations of 6 or more guests, guests are encouraged to contact TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ directly. The fees for accommodation start from JPY 8,000 and up, depending on the reservation site.

Deputy Chief Priest Jun Hong, who also serves as the founder of TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ, says that the temple was his childhood home filled with memories. After years of effort and support from many, the temple has been transformed into a lodging facility that offers guests a chance to experience the Buddhist elements scattered throughout and enjoy everyday life with a touch of humor.

Through TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ, Jun Hong hopes to provide guests with opportunities to realize the importance of everyday life and give a push to their backs. To learn more about TEMPLE STAY ZENSŌ and the surrounding area, please visit their website.
