GSTC and Tokyu Hotels partner to boost sustainable tourism in Japan

Tokyu Hotels & Resorts and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last month to advance sustainable tourism in Japan by integrating international benchmarks into Japanese hospitality operations. This agreement is the first time international non-profit organisation GSTC has entered into such a partnership with a domestic hotel operator in Japan.

Under the terms of the MOU, Tokyu Hotels will consider adopting the GSTC Criteria as a framework for its future sustainability roadmaps, targets, and key performance indicators. The GSTC will support these efforts by providing the hotel group with access to international expertise, case studies, and its global network. This structured approach ensures that the hotel group aligns its environmental and social goals with recognised global standards.

The partnership also focuses on enhancing Tokyu Hotels’ sustainable supply chains and operational practices. The hotel brand intends to expand its range of products and services that account for environmental, social, cultural, and economic impacts. This involves fostering closer ties with partners, suppliers, and other GSTC-certified hotels to ensure sustainability is maintained throughout the procurement process.

Both organisations will cooperate on training and awareness programmes for employees and stakeholders to improve their understanding of sustainable tourism. Furthermore, they plan to explore future collaborations with educational institutions to train the next generation of hospitality professionals.

Takashi Takei, President of Tokyu Hotels & Resorts, stated that the agreement allows the company to refine its sustainability strategy using international knowledge. He noted that incorporating GSTC standards will lead to a transformation in operational mindsets and improve the global competitiveness of Japan’s tourism market. Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC, welcomed the collaboration, and described how adopting these standards is a vital step in achieving sustainable hospitality in Japan.
