Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

Sustainable beauty soap brand 9.kyuu mixes astrology into collection

Sustainable beauty is a new standard driving progress in the cosmetics industry. From packaging to product testing to ingredients, companies are attempting to implement the best practices they can achieve.

In Japan, beauty soap brand 9.kyuu is very much aware of this global trend. The brand is seeking to provide sustainable, organic soap with minimal usage of plastic packaging. 9.kyuu has recently announced their new Cosmic Cube collection, which features 12 cubes of different kinds of soap, inspired by astrology and the 12 horoscope signs.

Each soap has different benefits, and each is made using different combinations of plant-based ingredients. As one example, the Gemini soap contains carrot oil, cucumber seed oil and aloe vera as its main ingredients, and makes your skin look brighter. Simultaneously, these body soaps are gentle enough to be used as a facial wash as they use no harsh chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate.

9.kyuu’s soaps are all made in Japan, using ingredients from soap-base manufacturer Stephenson from Yorkshire, United Kingdom. This long-standing British company’s soap bases are certified by the Soil Association, the largest organic certifier in the UK. Additionally, palm oil, which is one of the main soap bases, is also certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a non-profit organization that ensures sustainable and responsible production of this vegetable oil.

Brand collaborations create diversity in the industry

The brand’s producer Saori Sugeno says that 9.kyuu is committed to the 12th SDG, “Responsible consumption and production.” The brand collaborates with an SDG-advocacy group known as “green 4” and organizes soap-making workshops to raise awareness about ethical production. The brand also supports flower cycling advocate Haruka Kawashima, whom we covered in a previous article. Using soap bases provided by 9.kyuu, she makes botanical soaps with unsold flowers that would otherwise be discarded.

Sugeno says that she’s looking to diversify the industries she collaborates with so that the brand can help more people see things from different angles. As more and more consumers are becoming conscious about their environmental responsibility, companies are also expected to produce green cosmetics while maintaining the effectiveness of their products. It is safe to say that forward-thinking brand 9.kyuu meets these criteria. On top of that, they have successfully integrated the theme of beauty and fun throughout their collections.
