MOTHEROUSE, an international Japanese brand known for ethically-made leather bags, received the Good Toy 2025 award for its RINNE Living Toy. The product consists of animal-themed leather puzzles crafted from recycled leather bags collected from customers and material offcuts. It’s also the first time a leather-based toy has won the award in its 35-year history.

The RINNE Living Toy belongs to the brand’s RINNE series, a name derived from the Japanese word for reincarnation. The series embodies the company philosophy of taking full responsibility for products until the end of their lifecycle. By repurposing cherished bags that customers no longer use, MOTHEROUSE transforms waste into modular pieces that children can assemble into specific animals or combine freely to create original creatures.

The Association of Art and Play Therapy, a non-profit organisation, manages the Good Toy Awards to guide parents and educators in selecting toys that demonstrate excellence in design, material quality, and play value. Professional toy consultants select the winners annually based on their potential to stimulate creativity and provide lasting engagement.
Selection committee members noted that MOTHERHOUSE’s puzzle toys allow users to experience the unique tactile qualities of leather, which offers a balance of firmness and softness. The judges highlighted how the natural colours of the recycled materials result in unexpected and beautiful creations. They also observed that the leather develops a deeper character and patina through repeated use, making the toy appealing to both children and adults.

The RINNE Living Toy is now on display at 14 toy museums across Japan, including the Tokyo Toy Museum and facilities in Hanamaki, Nara, and Tokushima.
