Optimised Nutrition Food to boost disaster resilience for Hitoyoshi Japan

Hitoyoshi City in Kumamoto Prefecture has signed an agreement with the Japan Saiteki Eiyo Food Association to ensure a stable supply of nutritionally balanced meals for residents in the event of a disaster. The formal pact was signed at Hitoyoshi City Hall on 29 June 2025.

The collaboration aims to address the significant health challenges faced by evacuees, who often struggle to maintain a balanced diet during emergencies. The association stated that nutritional deficiencies during a prolonged evacuation can have a considerable impact on the physical and mental well-being of those affected.

The timing of the agreement is significant too, coinciding with a memorial service for the victims of the devastating July 2020 heavy rains that severely impacted the region. City officials and the association hope the new partnership will strengthen local disaster readiness and raise public awareness.

Under the terms of the agreement, the association will rapidly supply its certified “Optimized Nutrition Food” products upon request from the city following a disaster. To launch the partnership, the organisation provided approximately 2,000 units of four different certified food products, which will be stockpiled in municipal disaster-preparedness facilities. This includes Nissin’s popular Nissin Curry Meshi and Soupless Cup Noodle.

The Japan Saiteki Eiyo Food Association certifies food products that are designed to provide a proper balance of essential nutrients tailored to an individual’s needs. The organisation stated its goal is to promote these foods not only for daily health but also as a vital component of emergency preparedness, ultimately contributing to public well-being.
