Gateway to Sustainability in Japan

New sustainable tableware “like a Paper Cup” challenges disposable culture

Two established Ishikawa-based companies, ceramics maker NIKKO COMPANY and chemical materials manufacturer Komatsu Matere Co., Ltd., have jointly developed “like a Paper Cup”, a sustainable tableware set designed to promote reuse over single-use consumption. The product features a fine bone china cup, styled after a conventional paper cup, paired with a functional fabric sleeve.

This collaboration is a conscious effort to re-evaluate the prevalent throwaway culture associated with paper cups, and the two companies offer us a durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative. The result can be attributed to Ishikawa Prefecture’s manufacturing prowess, merging distinct technologies and materials from local enterprises. The project was born from a shared ambition to invigorate the local region through innovative manufacturing.

The cup, produced by NIKKO, is crafted from its signature fine bone china, a material noted for its light weight, strength, smooth texture, and translucent white appearance. The designs are inspired by local Kanazawa landmarks: the “Tsuzumi-mon” drum gate and “Degoushi” latticework, with options for gold detailing. NIKKO also promotes circularity in its operations by transforming off-spec ceramics from its manufacturing process into “BONEARTH®”, a recycled fertiliser primarily composed of calcium phosphate, thereby minimising waste.

Komatsu Matere developed the sleeve using its “KONBU®” material, known for its natural, dry texture, structural firmness, and remarkable lightness. The dyeing process for the sleeves incorporates “Onibegie®” technology, which uses plant-derived components, including discarded onion skins. Komatsu Matere’s sewing methods are designed to reduce fabric cut-loss and seam allowances. The sleeve is designed to make holding hot beverages more comfortable and to manage condensation from cold drinks. The set’s simple, unisex design has broad appeal, suitable for office use or as a gift.

Through this product, NIKKO and Komatsu Matere aim to provide an alternative for consumers, challenging their single-use habits and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle.
